A Job Beyond Photography

Being your wedding photographer is a privilege because we get to do so much more than just take photographs of our clients on their wedding day. Engaged couples planning their wedding generally hire a photographer before any other vendor, putting us in a special position to be an integral part of the planning process! Interacting with our clients on a daily basis up until their big day is part of what makes us love our job so much. The following is a little explanation of what goes into being your wedding photographer.

So Much More Than Just Taking Photos

Timeline Planning & Coordinating

One of the first things we encourage couples to do is figure out their wedding timeline! The wedding timeline is the backbone of your special day; an hour-by-hour, and sometimes minute-by-minute, planning of each part of the event, which allows you to stay organized and ensure everything you want to happen during your wedding ends up happening! As your wedding photographer, it’s our job to be an integral part of planning your timeline, helping to ensure there’s time budgeting to get all the images you’re hoping for. With a huge amount of experience helping to plan and shoot weddings, we are confident we can help you plan your big day to absolute perfection!

Let’s talk about style for a moment. With such a vast array of wedding color, decor, location, dress, flower, and food ideas circulating around the web, it can be very difficult to plan your wedding with a cohesive look & feel – meaning every detail blends beautifully with the next, and the entire wedding experience is consistent. As photographers, we are highly visual and detail-oriented, and after seeing many weddings over the past years, have developed some pretty strong opinions on which style choices make a wedding look stunning on camera (and which just don’t!). We will help to guide you in making these choices – everything from the bridal bouquet to the decorative touches on the cake – without breaking the bank or going over budget.

Of course, our primary job is to take beautiful images of your special day! We also offer an engagement session several months before the wedding, giving you beautiful casual images together to use for save-the-date cards, wedding invitations, wedding websites, social media posts, and more! The engagement session also gives us a chance to figure out how to work together before the big day, meaning we figure out your best positions, and angles you like and don’t like, but also learn what to say or do to get genuine and real expressions.

Post Production

Most of the time a photographer spends working on a wedding is not behind the camera but in front of their computer. Most of us have a process that we go through, but it is mostly the same. The first thing we do is transfer our images from the cards to the computer! (Duh) Some of us keep multiple hard drives and back up your images several times over, others have one, then have an online service back them up. Either way, that is the first thing that we do. The next is to start the culling process.

Some of us run our images from the day through a culling program that selects all of the usable images and gets them ready to edit, others go through and carefully look at each image to see which ones we feel are diamonds in the rough. After a wedding, we can come home with anywhere from 500 to 2000 images between us and our second shooter. After we finish culling it is between 300 and 800 usable images. Once the culling process is over, we get to editing.

When we edit there are multiple ways we do it. Some of us send our images out to an editor and they do it for them and some of us edit them ourselves. If we edit ourselves, we hand edit each image to make sure they are beautiful and consistent. We use presets and tweak each image so they look right, some of us created our own presets, and others edit each image from start to finish without any help at all.

Either way, the editing process takes at least double the time it takes to actually shoot your wedding.

After we send you your gallery and once your orders are in for your prints, albums, and heirloom photo products, we work diligently to make sure those products look stunning! Albums are designed by hand with a strong modern sensibility to become timeless design objects gracing your home for decades. Prints are hand-cropped and color-corrected to perfection. Photo gifts are packaged perfectly for a lovely presentation. We take our design just as seriously as our photography!

And that is why our job is so much more than pictures. Thank you for reading!!!
